(The following is the manuscript for episode three of season one of the Breaking the Digital Spell podcast, which premiered on September 4th, 2018. Available wherever you get your podcasts, or you can listen online here.) “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Gospel of John opens up with a beautiful description of the lordship and majesty of Jesus Christ by echoing the very first words of Scripture: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth.” Jesus Christ, the Son of God sent by the Father, was not a being created by God but was present with the Father and the Spirit in the very act of creation, and as the Apostle Paul writes in the book of Colossians, “For by him all things were created, in a heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him.” In Genesis, we see God’s creation unfold by His spoken word – eight times in Genesis 1 we see the words “And God said”, and whatever is spoken of, happens.
